Mathematical and Computational Science is an interdepartmental undergraduate program designed for students interested in applying mathematical ideas and analysis to problems in the biological, computational, financial or management sciences.

• June 5th @ 5pm - Late pplication deadline for Spring Quarter degree conferral ($50 fee). Late Application to Graduate for Bachelor's Degree
  
  
• New Statistics Track for M&CS students
  Students in the M&CS program can now pursue a Statistics Track, aimed at those wishing to pursue statistical interests in industry or academia. Beyond the basic M&CS curriculum, the track requires three statistics electives at the MS level, as well as an advanced course in Computer Science and in MS&E. (See the program details below.) Stat Track students advancing to the statistic coterminal program will then be able venture further into the MS and Phd course lists.
  
  M&CS Statistics track (total units 85)
  Take the same MATH, CS, and MS&E courses as in the Standard Program.
  1. Add STATS 217 to required STAT courses.
  2. Add an advanced MS&E class on stochastic applications such as MS&E 220 or MS&E 223.
  3. Add an advanced CS such as CS246 (mining huge data sets).
  4. Three electives from MS level STATS classes. Recommended classes include:
     • STATS 202
     • STATS 206
     • STATS 207
     • STATS 208
     • STATS 216
     • STATS 219
     • STATS 270
  
  Students pursuing a graduate career in Statistics may take STATS 305, STATS 306A, or STATS 310. Math Comp Sci Program.

• MS&E changed its course offerings and MS&E 221 will not be offered Spring qtr. **Only** if you had planned on taking this class in the Spring in order to graduate in June, you can substitute STATS 207 or another course approved by your M&CS advisor. But please check with your advisor before selecting a substitute.

What former Math & Comp Sci students are doing now

• M&CS major Eric Vishria (class of 1999), (Co-founder and CEO) at RockMelt in Mountain View recently released a new Web browser that will manage users' interactions with sites like Facebook and Twitter in its data center.
  
  
• New York Times highlighted former Math & Comp Sci grad Ren Ng (class of 2001), whose innovative camera due out later this year by Lytro allows a picture's focus to be adjusted after it is taken. Holding a PhD in computer science from Stanford, he received his BS earlier in Mathematical and Computational Science.
  
  
• Following his M&CS program at Stanford, Henry Towsner (class of 2003) pursued a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University. He now serves as an Assistant Professor at UPenn, Department of Mathematics.
  
  
• Adam Wright's BS in M&CS (class of 2004) was followed by a PhD in Medical Informatics from the Oregon Health & Science University. He is currently a medical informatician in the Clinical Informatics R&D group at Partners Health Care and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
