About SJO

Who we are...

Stanford Jazz Orchestra (SJO) is a group of students of students who are committed to keeping the tradition of big band jazz alive at Stanford. We play one major concert each quarter in Dinkelspiel Auditorium on the Stanford Campus, as well as a number of gigs.
Sponsored by the Music department of Stanford University, SJO is one of several ensembles in the Stanford Music curriculum. Its membership is primarily open to undergraduate students.

A Brief History of SJO

SJO started as the Stanford Studio Band in the early 1960's and was directed by the Teaching Assistant to Art Barnes, Director of Bands. In 1991 we changed our name to the Stanford Jazz Orchestra when Fredrick Berry became director. Past members of SJO include Tom Harrell, Ray Drummond, and two time Emmy winner Glen Daum.

Since 1995, when the visiting artist program was instituted, we have featured a major world class artists in every formal concert.  Past artists include Louie Bellson, Bob Florence, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Bobby Hutcherson, Jon Faddis, Eddie Henderson, Marvin Stamm, Julian Priester, Billy Harper, Ndugu Chancler, Billy Higgins, Oscar Brashear, Harold Land, DeeDee Bridgewater, Jeff Clayton, Ed Soph, John Worley, and Martin Wehner.

Fredrick Berry, Director

Director Fred Berry is a Lecturer in Jazz Studies at Stanford University. Mr. Berry has also been Director of the Jazz Program at the College of San Mateo for the past twenty years. He holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music from Southern Illinois University and later did additional graduate work at Stanford.
A frequent performer on trumpet in professional Bay Area jazz ensembles, Mr. Berry has performed with Count Basie, McCoy Tyner, Benny Carter, Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Lou Rawls, Lionel Hampton and many others.
