Small Groups 2005-2006

The best way to find spiritual nourishment and enduring Christian friendship is in the more intimate setting of weekly Small Groups. Our hope is that each group will be much more than a mere study and will include all the ingredients of a healthy fellowship of believers. Please contact the leaders if you are interested in their Small Group! (All email addresses are "@stanford.edu" unless noted otherwise.)

We have five small group fellowships this year...

1. I Corinthians

Leaders: Paul (pleu) and Jonathan (jmgray)
Time: Mondays 7-9 pm
Place: EV apt 6D

I Corinthians begins by establishing Christ as the fount of all wisdom and ends by proclaiming that his resurrection gives us victory over death. In between, it covers topics such as unity, marriage (and celibacy), Christian freedom, propriety in worship, the Lord's Supper, spiritual gifts, agape love, and even incest and shady litigation! Join us as we explore Paul's great epistle. We seek to nurture genuine community through worship, prayer, and service together.

2. Hearing God's Call

Leaders: Pete (pete.sommer@sbcglobal.net), Greg (gregng), and Alissa (aeb@stanford.edu)
Time: Tuesdays 7-9 pm
Place: Lyman
The Oct 4th meeting will be in the Lyman atrium building, in the study lounge without the TV (this is opposite the laundry room). Subsequent meetings will be at Greg's apartment (Lyman #3103). See map here.

Our Small group will focus on a survey of the "call" passages in the Bible: Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Moses, Hannah, David, Isaiah, Daniel, Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Paul, and others. What can we learn about God's guidance for our lives by considering his call to these men and women?

3. The Fruit of the Spirit

Leaders: Lumina (luminakaran@yahoo.co.in) and Karan (vskaran)
Time: Tuesdays, 7-9pm
Place: 28 Olmsted Rd, Apt 107

Paul summarizes the "fruit of the Spirit" in Galatians 5:22-23 as: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control and tells us that against such things there is no law. These qualities are a description of Jesus Christ. God's highest purpose for us as Christians is to make us like Jesus. As we fulfill this purpose by getting to know our Lord better and by obeying Him, we will exhibit the fruit of the Spirit. We hope to be a community in which we support each other to grow in our Lord through Bible study of related scriptures on the fruit of the Spirit, and through encouragement, worship, prayer and service.

4. The Parable People

Leaders:Kevin (kross@soe.ucsc.edu), Hannah (hemiller@pangea.stanford.edu) and Lena (lenaho)
Time: Wednesdays, 7:30-9:30pm
Place: email Lena (lenaho) for current meeting location

"I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world"

What did Christ say in his parables? What did his words mean to the people of his day, and what do they mean for us today? Jesus presented some of the most profound and provocative truths through parables. Through them, God has revealed to us His recipes for a Christ-centered life, and we look forward to exploring them together. We anticipate being challenged to lead lives reflecting God's values, and we aspire to grow in faith together through bible study, fellowship, prayer and accountability. Graduate school is an excellent time to explore Christ's words in community, and we look forward to sharing a fruitful year together.

5. I and II Peter

Leaders: George (gtchang) and Wendy (wching)
Time: Tuesdays, 7-9 pm
Place: 575 Stanford Ave.

In his two letters, Peter writes with clarity and fervor about God's gift of salvation and what a life in Christ should be. In our study, we hope to absorb some of Peter's passion as we study his words together and share time in prayer and fellowship.
