Shelley Fisher Fishkin
Professor of English, Director of American Studies

Shelley Fisher Fishkin is one of the leading scholars in American culture and literature, particularly on the work of Mark Twain. She is the editor of the Oxford edition of Twain’s work, and she most recently edited and published Twain’s play Is He Dead? Her other books include Lighting Out for the Territory: Reflections on Mark Twain, Was Huck Black: Mark Twain and African-American Voices, and From Fact to Fiction: Journalism and Imaginative Writing in America. She is also a co-editor of Encyclopedia of Civil Rights in America and Listening to Silences: New Essays in Feminist Criticism, and the editor of People of the Book: Thirty Scholars Reflect on their Jewish Identity. She is currently president of the American Studies Association.
