Estelle
Freedman, who for many years was director of Feminist Studies,
specializes in U.S. women’s history, particularly the
role of women in movements for social reform. She has also
written extensively on the history of sexuality in the U.S.,
as well as lesbian history. Her most recent book, No Turning
Back: The History and the Future of Women, has been widely
praised as one of the most comprehensive and analytical studies
of feminism to date. Her other books include, Maternal
Justice: Miriam Van Waters and the Female Reform Tradition,
Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America,
and Their Sisters’ Keepers: Women’s Prison
Reform in America, 1830-1930.
