New ZealandFOUCAULT'S GYROSCOPE OF 1852
The gyroscopes in Gravity Probe B are attempting to measure properties of space in the vicinity of the Earth. Exactly the same aim drove Léon Foucault (of pendulum fame) to devise the very first gyroscope in 1852.
William Tobin has recently published /The Life and Science of Léon Foucault: The Man Who Proved the Earth Rotates /(Cambridge University Press, 2003)
