Exploring New Physics with Torsion Pendula

Abstract: Equivalence principle violation, deviationsfrom the inverse-square law of gravity, and long-range interactions between particle spins offer powerful tests of beyond-the-standard-model physics, including large extra dimensions, dark energy scalar fields, and hidden high energy symmetries.

The torsion pendulum, a technology that dates to the 18th century, is still the most sensitive way to search for some of these signatures of new physics.I will talk about how such experiments are done and give an update on the current and future status of the torsion balance experiments in the Eot-Wash group.
