From ESWStanford
ESW SAID conference update
funding
- nothing is for certain but we have 3 big companies that have expressed interest
company 1
has responded and would like to know exactly where the money would go
- they wanted us to better specify what's going on
- they are willing to work with us to do all the printed stuff, webstuff etc.
- they can advertise to the greater community
- company 1 customers are definitely people who would be interested in the types of things that we do
company 2
they do Pure water filters, but said that our conference was too general, and want more specifics as well
- they again may be able to provide services
Company 3
???
focus
from our side, we can hype the fact that it's a small and tight group of people
point of view streaming
keynote speaker
Donald Kennedy has agreed to speak
- Biologist by training but has a general and varied background
- he's interested not only in critical problems but the appropriate technologies to address
another potential speaker, Paul Polak?
- how might the group feel about having 3 white males as the speakers?
- we should think and talk about this
- there is another person from UNICEF
schedule
leading up to the Friday and Saturday we will have opportunities to do lots of events
- tours of labs, Palo Alto Research center
for thursday, we'd like to set up a poster session within Civil & Environmental
- Craig Crittle, Dick Luthy, Sporman, Jenna, Ali
we could also work with some of these folks for a panel discussion
Friday
Polak's talk
- we're trying to find a way to create a link
- what does it mean for an individual? (this can be a theme)
late night movie showing
still up in the air
Saturday
Donald Kennedy would probably speak this day
this is the big day, both SAID panels and ESW too?
- think big had several panels at the same time
- we need to think about
water in the future of the world
China and sustainability
appropriate water tech and design
water health and sanitation
design expo
trying to get an engineer from LifeStraw (non-profit)
- they will walk people through the design process
- bring some products to show, but can't give them out - they don't sell to individuals
- maybe a couple people from IDEO
social entrepreneurship and water, Fusion is handling this
nanotech and water
there was a conference in India (we can't get), but there are some local folks working on this
- emails have been sent, and folks are interested but the logistics need to be worked out
water and gender issues
Sunday
capstone panel with folks from many different backgrounds
this would be great but we may not be able to get mem aud, or can we fill it?
- Kresge might be better fit if we have ~500
SAID's way with conferences
bring the NGO's and startups together for discussion
travel funding
both ESW and SAID together have $20k
biggest challenge is marketing and advertising
marketing ideas
- flyers, troubled waters event Feb 19th ads, work with Cleantech job fair, they need help with this
- we don't have a list of companies and NGOs but we can let these folks know about the CDC's job fair
- how to market it while it's still being prepared?
- we almost need different phases to correspond to how much stuff is set
- working with people from HAAS and other resources is good
- maybe a movie thing
marketing goals
- reach out to people to get them excited
- communicate the details of the events
another challenge, organizing panels
it makes sense to have a point person who owns each panel
organizing the poster session and the lab tours
Eric needs help with both of these things
design challenge for working on a logo and design issues
Eric needs help with this too
decision to be made
should we have individual owners for each panel?
volunteer levels
- planning
- owning a panel
- day of conference driving, clean up
- material research, company liaison
- managing the NGO fair
- registrants
- managing dues (if we charge)
registration and whether or not we charge
SAID doesn't want to charge but sometimes charging add legitimacy
- early
- regular
- late
- day of and walk-ins
one idea is to do a dinner and have people buy tickets
next steps
getting people on board - Whit will craft a draft email and Eric to fill in the detail
