Palo Alto Greener City Project

Ben and Georg

Georg: visiting researcher at the d.school

If you are interested,

Project: software at Palo Alto, trying to save the planet

  • city officials, need-finding has been worked on, still working on Points of View
  • going to be implemented in Palo Alto
    • one idea to try to increase awareness via a green meter

does ESW have any feedback for the project?

  • don't know where it would be shown
    • would it work on the bill? red bill if they are over average
    • real time?
  • another idea, no hassles way to contact city people to get help

open ended project

  • they are looking for ideas, as well as needs
  • anything that you may have thought of but couldn't get to

company in Redwood City e-meter

  • What are the real incentives for the city of PA?
  • What are the needs of the end users? residential? commercial? industrial?
  • other stakeholders?
  • specific information linked to the problems called out on the 'meter' or 'bill'
    • linking the retailers with the bills, may pay to be recommended
  • information on-line, allowing companies to bid to sell consumers more efficient

Is overall goal to 'green' Palo Alto?
Project itself has the goal of saving the planet (purposefully wide) in scope
What about East Palo Alto, and combining sustainability with affordability

D.Light

Goal: bring low cost lighting to rural Myanmar
Anil: Long track record of bringing sustainability and development issues together

Feedback?

  • seemed like a good event
    • had about 25 people showed up (how did we know? through past experience)
    • relevant to an ethanol or biodiesel workshop?
    • mixing afterward was good
    • people were very open to discuss their experiences
      • very forward about new ideas
    • Sam's introduction helped to promote atmosphere
  • some issues, or ways to improve
    • seemed more lecture format with chairs than intended
    • circular seating arrangement might have helped
    • more of a 'guided discussion' might have been interesting as well
    • how else to promote discussion?
      • in email, ask people to come prepared to discuss (have questions, etc.)

Issues

IP issues: protect IP or save the $ and make the product cheaper

  • only needed if someone might undercut
  • time an cost are more important drivers

Future Directions... (Secret agenda iteam)

linking up with other groups and focusing on workshops
narrowing our focus to broaden the base
continuing relationships rather than year-long projects

Biodiesel Speker

The proposed speaker isn't necessarily pro-ethanol, might be good for a pro-vs-con discussion
A possible speaker may be the Senator or Steve Schneider?
We should spend some time
