Heather Bischel

I'm a "NorCal" gal...born in Mt. Shasta, raised in Auburn, and schooled at the University of California, Berkeley where I studied Civil and Environmental Engineering. I'm now a PhD student in Environmental Engineering and Science, focusing on contaminants released into the environment and water reuse for ecological restoration. I see ESW at Stanford as a means to become fully engaged in challenging international problems and as a group that supports efforts to understand and partake in sustainability - as humanitarians, environmental stewards, and continuous learners. I'm excited to spend another year with ESW-Stanford, pursuing our vision and connecting with others interested in sustainability.

Grace Hsu

I've spent my whole life in the Bay Area, amidst organic grocery stores and the like. I enjoy playing golf, sketching, running, and being in ESW, which I discovered in the middle of my freshman year as we were gearing up for the Andaman Islands Project. Some of my internship and research experiences have included stints at Agilent Technologies' Corporate Quality Department (Santa Clara), the Carnegie Institute of Washington, and the Environmental Defense (Washington, D.C.).

Whitfield Fowler

I'm originally from Minneapolis, MN. I did my undergraduate studies at St. Olaf, a liberal arts college about an hour south of the twin cities. I spent about 3 years working as a mechanical design engineer at a product design company in Minneapolis before moving out to the SF Bay Area, and applying to grad schools. Currently I'm a Ph.D. student in the Manufacturing Modeling Lab, and my research focusses on Design For Reliability and long term risk management. I've been involved with ESW since 2006 (I think), and it has been a great way for me to include environmental and social aspects to my work here at Stanford.

Sarah Toukan

My name is Sarah Toukan, and I'm an undergraduate student from Jordan double majoring in mechanical engineering and economics. Currently, I'm working on establishing a Fellowship Program for students like myself who are looking for opportunities to intern with organizations in developing countries, to work to solve some of the world's most pressing issues. Max von Bargen

I'm originally from Washington, DC, but living right now in San Jose. I'm a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering; at the moment my particular focus is on vehicle and vehicle component design. Perhaps as a carry-over from my Washingtonian childhood, I'm interested in the policy side of environmentalism as well as the technological side. Outside of engineering, I enjoy playing jazz saxophone, golf, watching or playing soccer, and reading up on some military history.

I am senior studying environmental engineering. I get excited about the environment, sustainability, helping developing countries, food (all kinds of cuisines), traveling to distant lands, and foreign films.

Yashraj Narang

I was born in New Delhi, grew up in Florida, went to high school in New Hampshire, and now study in California. I love traveling, and I've spent eight months over the past three years living, studying, and teaching in China. I'm fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and I've also studied Hindi and Spanish. As far as my time at Stanford, I'm majoring in biomechanical engineering and minoring in materials science and Asian languages, but I have a strong interest in sustainability and engineering service. This interest actually began when I learned about ESW's work at the start of last year, and it's continued as I've taken courses focused on solar cells, biofuels, and other sustainable technologies since then.

Annalise Blum

I'm a junior majoring in Environmental Engineering. I love to travel and volunteer. Last summer I helped with a research project on Water, Health and Sanitation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I also took a year off between high school and college and worked for North Andaman Tsunami Relief in Thailand and taught English in Xela, Guatemala. I'm from Berkeley, Ca, but I've also lived in Fort Collins, Colorado, Monteverde, Costa Rica, and Kathmandu, Nepal.

Milena Gonzalez

A Freshman this year...so fresh!...Milena is ready to start life at Stanford getting involved, and what better than being a part of ESW: engineering, sustainability, new friends, and helping communities in need? It doesn't get better than that...Currently, Milena is thinking of majoring in Chemical Engineering and possibly minoring in Econ/Latin American Studies. She is Mexican and Panamanian, but has lived in several different places such as Italy and Canada; Stanford will be the 7th one.

Jessica Fosbrook

Jess is interested in water projects and general sustainability in the developing world. She brings experience from working in water projects in small, rural villages in Honduras with Engineers Without Borders during her undergraduate years at Northeastern University in Boston. As one of the Directors of Events she plans to organize events for ESW and to compile a list of other events on cmapus that our members may be interested in.

Katherine Rostkowski

Katherine Rostkowski received her B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Yale University, where she was involved with Engineers Without Borders for four years. She has recently become involved with Engineers for a Sustainable World at Stanford as Director of Events. She is a first year PhD student with interests in sustainable design and hopes to incorporate that into her event-planning.

I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC and completed my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland. I'm currently working towards a M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, specifically Environmental Fluid Mechanics and Hydrology. I look forward to working with others to carry out our civic duties as a global citizen.

Hi! I'm from Arizona originally and did my undergrad at Stanford in Product Design. Im now doing a 2-year mechanical engineering coterm with an emphasis on design. In my free time I love traveling, outdoors things, sports (soccer and lacrosse), and my new puppy! I'll add more later! :)
