ESW 2nd annual biodiesel workshop, May 9 2008

ESW taught 16 students how to make biodiesel from waste veggie oil procured from Lakeside Dining. We followed up the workshop with a policy discussion, led by Professor Chris Field and IPER PhD candidate Joanne Gaskell who shared their knowledge of the issues surrounding the debate on biofuels: land use change, net carbon effects, food security, and technical feasibility.

Patra Dewi shared her story of her founding of KOGAMI, an NGO that provides tsunami warning, evacuation strategies, public education, and tsunami relief to communities in Indonesia.

Water and the Developing World

Sustainable Campus Design Project in Tanzania, Winter Quarter 07-08
Over the winter quarter, we held weekly meetings and developed a range of design concepts; our recommendations were delivered to the architect responsible for creating the master plan, and presented to the Bahati Board.

Summer Internship
Two students participated in the Summer 2007 ESW-Stanford internship in the Himalayan region of India and Nepal. Check out the internships page for more information about the interns and links to their blogs to follow their progress.

Anil Chitrakar and D.light
On Tuesday, May 1st, we heard from Ashoka Fellow Anil Chitrakar and GSB student Sam Goldman talk about their amazing work abroad. Sam is the co-founder of D.light, a group committed to bringing low-cost LED light to rural Myanmar. Slow Sand Filter Workshop
On Sunday, April 29, we led a hands-on workshop demonstrating the principles and construction of a slow sand filter for water purification. The filters will be on display at the Stanford GreenFest on White Plaza, Friday, May 4. Come out to visit our table, learn more about water filtration and ESW in general.
