Introduction
Flavonoids are a large and diverse class of molecules that include many important pigment molecules en developed through classic breeding, but with modern genetics scientists are starting to gain a deeper understanding of what contributes to flower coloration and how it can be manipulated. This study sought to explore the mechanism behind the variegated flower coloration of the dahlia variety Dixie’s Winedot.text/html2008-06-14T14:28:09-08:00walbotinfopages:resources:map - created

Handling Tubers
Fall 2007, tubers were removed from the outdoor planting beds for ~25 varieties representing the diversity of leaf shape, stem color, flower color, and floral form. Surprisingly, a very healthy Magenta Star plant had no tubers, so another single flower type was selected. Four tuber types were put into each large green tub with planting mix soil. A label was written for each tuber type, starting a color code that we maintained throughout propagation.text/html2008-06-14T13:24:33-08:00walbotinfopages:resources:2008reports

The wiki version of the Dahlia Knowledgebase is an attempt to make our dahlia resources searchable, more easily edited, and more current and will thus supercede the old Walbot lab dahlia website. From a very early point, we will try to mirror the old website in all respects, but we'll keep the old chestnut around for awhile.text/html2008-06-14T12:58:56-08:00walbotinfopages:term_and_morph

Dahlia as a genus traces its ancestry to D. zimpanii. This simple or primitive species is morphologically closely related to plants in the genus Bidens, with identifying similarities in leaf shape, achene shape and pappus structure. Some initial confusion regarding the placement of this species relegated it at one point to the genus Bidens (as B. dahliaoides), in 1890. Other early systematists placed the genus close to Cosmos or Coreopsis. In addition to D. zimpanii, which is currently placed in…
