Zebrafish have the unique ability to regenerate several of its tissues, including those of the heart, retina, spinal cord, and fins. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that underlie this process should provide insights into how tissue regeneration is achieved and reveal strategies for their reactivation in humans. Shawn’s goal is to decipher the molecular and cellular events associated with larval tail regeneration. He has identified several genes that are upregulated or downregulated in posterior cells after the tail is amputated and is working to determine the roles of these genes in the regenerative process.
