Microfluidic platforms for single-cell analysis have been developed. The protein chip allows for manipulating individual cyanobacteria cells and quantitatively detecting the proteins in light-harvesting antenna complexes.

The DNA chip enables the amplification of genomic DNA from an environmental cyanobacterium and downstream genetic analysis. These platforms, with proper adaptations and improvements, will be used to explore the origin and dynamics of the cell-to-cell heterogeneity found in a microbial population or community.
