The artist notes: "European Bitterns are non-migratory
birds and survival in cold winters is difficult. I often
saw them in the snow 15 years ago, when the species was
still rather common in my village, Kockengen. Now I only
occasionally see them here, even though the quallity of
their reed bed habitat does not seem to have changed.
European Bitterns are included in the IUCN Red List
of Threatened Species, which provides information on species
a high risk of global extinction."
