I am holding a photomultiplier that consititutes one element in AMANDA -- Antarctic Muon and Neutrino Detector Array, which consists of arrays of photomultipliers at depths of 1-2 km in the ice cap of the South Pole that utilizes the ice as a Cerenkov detector. If this project works, it will usher in a new form of astronomy. The actual site is where the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA) is housed at the NSF South Pole Station.
