SESU's first event was a collaboration between Bay Area Ethiopians and the Stanford Ethiopian Student Union. This first community service project was a fundraiser for Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin -- one of Ethiopia's most noteable playwrights and poet laureates.
The program consisted of poetry readings from Tsegaye's work in both English and Amharic. It was followed by dramatic renditions from his plays, musical tributes, and original poetry written and presented by SESU members. The event was attended by people from the Stanford and Bay Area community, and approximately $3,000 was raised and donated towards Poet Tsegaye's upcoming kidney transplant in New York.
