Manuel Castells (Ph.D., University of Paris) is Professor of City &
Regional Planning, and Professor of Sociology, at the University of California at Berkeley
(sicne 1979). Prior to 1979 he was Associate Professor of Sociology at the Ecole des
Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He has been a visiting professor at 15
universities in Europe, United States, Canada, Russia, Latin America, and Asia. In the
period 1989-98, he conducted field work studies in Moscow, Zelenograd, Tyumen, and the
Russian Far East, and cooperated with the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of
Sciences in Novosibirsk, as well as with the Russian Sociological Association in Moscow. Recent
