Frequency effects may operate differently within words than across word
boundaries. This talk examines in detail some optional phonological
alternations within a corpus of Tagalog. Some alternations appear highly
lexicalized, with most words' pronunciations being fixed - in word+clitic
combinations, unsurprisingly, there seems to be little lexicalization,
with most items displaying variation. Both within and across words,
however, frequency and other distributional factors play a role in
determining whether alternations apply. This talk explores the degree to
which behavior of individual items - including within/across-word
differences - can be predicted by models of lexical access.
