Our Mission and Services
The mission of the Learning and Development team is to provide professional development opportunities for Stanford employees and organizational development consultation for Stanford departments and work groups. We also provide support to University-wide initiatives for making Stanford a better place to work, assist Human Resources in increasing its capacity to serve the University, and encourage coordination of training activities across the University. We will work with you to create alignment between your organization and your goals in areas such as:

- Vision, Mission
- Strategy
- Long-term planning
- Organizational structure
- Process Improvement
- Team building, Teamwork

How do I find out what professional and career development courses are available in addition to those offered by L&D?
The Training Opportunities Guide is a quarterly print publication distributed via ID mail to staff, and has a comprehensive listing of courses and workshops offered by training providers on the main campus. The Guide is also posted in Axess on the Stanford Training and Registration System (STARS) tab.

How do I register for professional development classes offered by L&D?
Each course has a course code; e.g., TOD-0100 that you use to enroll. Login to Axess, click the STARS (Training) tab, and enter the course code in the Search Catalog field. The name of the course is listed, then click Continue. All details about the course are shown; click Enroll. You'll get a confirmation email.

How can I request training just for my department?
Contact our Training Coordinator at kchrestman@stanford.edu. If L&D staff are not available to provide the training, we will refer you to an external instructor, and your department will need to contract with and pay the instructor for the course.

How do I use the Staff Training Assistance Program (STAP) to help me take professional development courses?

How can I check my STAP usage and balance?
Starting September 1, 2007, your total STAP usage and balance will be reported in STARS, the Stanford Training and Registration System in Axess. This balance includes the Continuing Studies Program courses, Information Technology Services (ITS) courses, Health Improvement Program (HIP) courses, and all classes taken from external training providers. To check your STAP balance, login to Axess and click the STARS (Training) tab. Click My STAP Balance in the left menu.
