Networking Systems
What We Do
The Networking Systems group designs and operates the Stanford University Network (SUNet). For academic and administrative buildings, we provide and support the data communication infrastructure to the facility entrance. Through the Net2Jack and Net2switch programs, we provide data communication infrastructure within the academic and administrative buildings. For student residences, Networking Systems supports the data communication infrastructure to the service outlets in student rooms. Networking Systems maintains off-campus connectivity through multiple internet connections as well as Internet2.
The Networking Systems group designs and operates the firewall infrastructure that protects Stanford's administrative systems. In addition, Networking Systems designs and operates a custom departmental firewall service for departments with a business need to secure their departmental network perimeter.
The Networking Systems group designs and maintains NetDB, a key element in the operation of SUNet. NetDB consists of a database containing information on SUNet's physical components, such as host computers, workstations, switches and routers. The NetDB web interface is utilized by Local Network Administrators to update the NetDB database. NetDB provides input to Stanford's DNS and DHCP services.
