Graduate Financial Aid

The availability and types of financial support for graduate students vary considerably among departments, schools, and programs. Some departments provide basic support to all doctoral students to whom they offer admission. Others are unable to offer support to all admitted students.

In general, Stanford financial support is reserved for doctoral students; very little non-loan support is given to students enrolled in master’s programs. In the School of Humanities and Sciences, many of our doctoral programs offer four to five years of financial support and a plethora of resources to help you succeed. Terms of aid offers are explained in department admission letters.

Application Fee Waivers
Stanford honors several types of application fee waivers, so finances should not prevent applying for admissions.

Funding your final years
In looking ahead, PhD students should bear in mind that, while some complete their program requirements in four years, most do not; the average time to degree is closer to six years. We encourage students to consider applying for dissertation fellowships at least one year prior to exhausting department funding. Departments can provide information on fellowships available to students in their field. Sources of funding for advanced graduate students offered through the School of Humanities and Sciences include can be found here.
