There are a variety of funding options for Stanford graduate students based on academic merit, financial need, course of study, or type of degree program. Most fellowships and grants are secured through academic departments or schools, or outside agencies or governments.

The central Financial Aid Office administers loans for graduate students in the Schools of Humanities and Sciences, Engineering, Education, Earth Sciences, and Medicine (non-M.D. only), as well as limited Federal Work-Study assistantships upon school or department recommendation.

To be considered for loans or Federal Work-Study eligibility, graduate students should submit the following forms:

• Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
• Graduate Loan and Federal Work-Study Application

After evaluating your application, the Financial Aid Office will send notification to your primary email address in AXESS. You will be able to review the details of the quarterly costs of attendance, award summaries, and funds disbursement status for loans on the AXESS website under the Finances tab.

Information and applications for the upcoming academic year are available in March.

Summer Quarter

Students with a FAFSA on file for the current academic year who want to apply for loans for Summer Quarter need to complete a Summer Quarter Graduate Loan Application by June 30.

Students who have not submitted a FAFSA for the current academic year and want to apply for loans for Summer Quarter must complete the Summer Quarter Graduate Loan Application and FAFSA by June 30.
