Microscale Actuator Design for Studying Cellular Biomechanics
Vikram Mukundan

The study of mechanotransduction has important applications in cell biology and tissue engineering. Mechanical forces play a role in governing the functions of different cell types. The goal of this research would be to develop micro-systems capable of studying the effects of mechanical forces on cells at a single cell level. This talk would first focus on a review of\par force measurement techniques applied to cells and describe the advantages of microscale system and its applications. A microscale actuator designed to be operated in biological media is presented. The second half of the talk would be directed at understanding the properties and characteristics of the micro-actuator, with particular focus on the challenges involved in interfacing such devices to cells.
