EFS 693A: Listening Comprehension | |

connie@csli.stanford.edu Office Hours: by appointment only OBJECTIVES This class will help you increase your ability to understand both formal and informal varieties of English and to retain and utilize what you have understood. The focus will be on English for academic purposes, but there will also be listening practice in other areas. CLASSWORK Classes will involve a variety of listening exercises and some discussion of the grammatical and sound systems of English. You will listen to lectures and other spoken material on videotapes, Internet websites and DVDs. Since there is a definite relationship between listening and speaking, you will be expected to participate ACTIVELY in all class and small group discussions. HOMEWORK Short optional and required assignments will use listening materials available on the Web or audio or videotaped materials. REQUIREMENTS In order to receive credit (a grade of S = Satisfactory) in EFS 693A, you must: á Attend at least 90% of the classes á Complete all required assignments á Participate actively in class discussions á Demonstrate improvement in your listening proficiency COURSE CONTENT Some or all of the following skills/topics listed below will be presented and/or practiced: * Note taking á Recognition of discourse markers á Reduced forms á Interpretation of intonation and stress [emphasis] á Intensive listening vs. extensive listening á Formal lectures vs. informal talks á Informal and idiomatic English STUDY LIST Please enter the following information on AXESS to complete your registration for this class. EFS 23190 Section 2 1-3 Units MWF 11:00 ¡V 11:50 am SPECIAL NEEDS Students who have a disability that may necessitate an academic accommodation or the use of auxiliary aids and services in a class must first request assistance from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) on campus.
