Estelle Freedman

Professor Freedman is a United States historian specializing in the
history of women, gender, and sexuality. Her most recent publication,
Maternal
Justice: Miriam Van Waters and the Female Reform Tradition studies
the charismatic figure of prison/social reformer Miriam Van Waters.
Other books include Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in
America, co-authored with John D'Emilio, and her first book, Their
Sisters' Keepers: Women's Prison Reform in America, 1830-1930.
Professor Freedman has taught at Stanford since 1976. She has
received the Dinkelspiel Award and the Rhodes Prize for Teaching and Service
to Undergraduate Education, among others.
