Grades and Expectations


What determines grades and what doesn't

  • Doesn't - time and effort spent on fabrication, presentations, reports; number of suggestor visits
  • Does - deliverables: presentations, reports, reflection, prototype functionality, participation

How do students do well in the class?

Team Project:
  • Meet with the instructor on a regular basis to discuss project progress
  • Provide regular updates by email
  • Make weekly progress
  • Work with the project suggestor and/or user with disabilities or older adult
  • Fabricate a high-quality functional prototype
  • Test and evaluate prototype with a user
Presentations:
  • Stay within assigned time limit
  • Cover all suggested items
  • Rehearse presentations
  • Verify that slides support the presentation
  • Provide good visuals
Reports:
  • Follow suggested format
  • Compose as a scientific article
  • Proofread reports
  • Incorporate mid-term markups in final report
Class:
  • Attend required lectures
  • Make best effort to get to class on time
  • Choose a seat that provides good audio and visual access to lectures
  • Multi-task the following activities
    • listen to guest lecturer
    • formulate questions
    • engage in class discussions
    • fill out lecturer evaluation form
    • reflect on what was presented
    • avoid distracting activities
Other:
  • Communicate any problems or concerns
  • Read and respond to all emails
  • Grading percentages
  • There is no provision for "extra credit" to enhance a student's grade.

Expectations and goals:

For students:
  • Take an interesting course
  • Learn new concepts
  • Be entertained
  • Earn a good grade
For instructor:
  • Provide excellent learning and project experience
  • Earn an outstanding online evaluation
