Stanford course, Perspectives in Assistive
Technology.
Course
News
Perspectives in
Assistive Technology is a Winter Quarter Stanford course - now starting its
tenth year - that explores the design, development, and use of assistive
technology that benefits people with disabilities and older adults. It consists
of semi-weekly classroom discussions; lectures by notable
professionals, clinicians, and assistive technology users; tours of
local medical, clinical, and engineering facilities; an assistive technology
faire; and a film screening. |

Course meeting
time - The course meeting time has changed slightly from previous years. It
is now scheduled from 4:30 to 5:50pm. It still meets on Tuesdays and
Thursdays in the same classroom as last year -
Thornton 110 - with the first class
session on Tuesday, January 5th.

Funding
support - The course has received funding support from the
Haas Center for Public Service and the
Community
Engaged Learning and Research. The funds cover basic course operating
expenses including student projects.

Updated
website - The course website for this
coming academic year has just been posted. Please note that some of the dates
listed in the schedule are tentative but
should be firmed up in a week or two.

Do you have an idea for an assistive technology
project? - You are encouraged to submit your project suggestions for
students to pursue. Visit the Course
Project Solicitation webpage for a list of project requirements and a
description of how best to convey your ideas. If your project is accepted, you
can "pitch" it to the class during the
second class session. If a student team selects it, you will then have the
opportunity to offer them advice, direction, and expertise in person, by phone,
and/or by email. |

A Personal and Historical Perspective on Creative Thinking and
Design with a Focus on Seniors - The course is pleased to have
Barbara Beskind on the lecture schedule. Barbara is a 91 year-old
designer and internationally recognized pioneer in the field of occupational
therapy. On Tuesday, January 26th, she will speak on designing for the senior
and/or visually impaired population. |

Perspectives on Bringing New Assistive Technology Products to
Market - Rob Karlovich & Ahmad Al-Ghazi will
discuss the challenges of commercializing the
LifeGlider and a new cane design
on Tuesday, February 23rd. |

Using Your Dog To Help You Recover from a Stroke or
Injury - Join service dog trainer, Jean Cary, to learn how you can
train your dog to help you with simple tasks, retrieve misplaced or dropped
objects, serve as a balance aid, or help with dressing. Your dog may be smarter
than you think! Jean will present an informative video and demonstration of her
own service dog, Ranger. Please do not bring your own
dogs to this lecture! The lecture is free,
but registration is recommended by calling Jean Cary at 650/593-9622 or
emailing jeancary@me.com. |
The seminar will
be held on Tuesday, October 27th from 2:45 to 3:45pm at Mills-Peninsula
Hospital, 1501 Trousdale Drive, Burlingame in Auditorium 2. |
