Really great content, I think just more live presentations instead of videos.

Thank you for the opportunity to observe. This was a very enjoyable experience!

Overall, I greatly enjoyed the guest lectures and the willingness for both Dave and Kat to just meet with the students. While I did not do the project, it has been awesome to hear the students' projects.

Really enjoyed the course and all of the guest lecturers! I think I've come away with a much better understanding of assistive technology.

I really liked the class! It really opened my eyes to a world that a lot of the time people designing products for others don't think about, but should! Thank you. I will always remember these lessons.

I appreciate how dedicated you both are, and the guest speakers were all great!

Fantastic guest lectures, phenomenal content, and participating in a project with a community member was a pure joy. I loved seeing the impact of my work and look forward to participating in similar project-based courses.

REALLY well done. Dave, I really prefer these SHORTER surveys since the others were way too long and made it hard to really listen to the presenters with that many questions to answer. This is a very magical addition to the Stanford experience and I personally thank you for doing it Dave.

Project experience was really awesome. Wish we had a bit more time to talk about them since a lot of energy went into it. (I used solely hand tools working with the walnut haha.)

Love the lectures, but I wish we didn't use videos more often than not. I understand schedule limitations, but videos in zoom calls are generally very disengaging.

Assistive Technology Faire was amazing!

I had a wonderful time taking this course. I loved the guest lecturers and appreciate the opportunity to design a device that could help someone.

I really enjoyed this class! I think there were some minor hiccups with Zoom towards the beginning, but the class really came through with the guest speakers, cool projects, and general information on designing for accessibility. Thank you both so much!

Everything was so well done in general. I really liked hearing from the guests.

The course was really interesting and I loved learning about the content.

I just joined the last two sessions, however, so impressed by their high-quality presentations. I can imagine how you well-organized this course even in the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Thank you so much for inviting me to this course. I learned a lot. Please keep in touch.

Great course.

Loved it! Wonderful. Thanks for letting me watch videos. I’m so very impressed with Dave and all the students! Wow, an inside look at a Stanford course!

Thank you so much for a great quarter! I really appreciate the project we were able to do as well as the support from you both. Kat, thank you for being such a great Course Assistant,

This course was great. I really enjoyed being able to partner with community members to develop really rewarding fabrication projects. I just wish I could've taken it in person!

I really enjoyed the class.

Great class. Thank you guys so much

I really loved this course and working with someone personally to design an assistive device!

This course was a thorough endeavor into assistive technology and all the different avenues it can take. Each guest speaker introduced me to a different situation or problem I was not aware of before. While I did not have a project, it was very stimulating to see each person's research report or their take on solving an issue. I was impressed by what my peers came up with. Thank you Dave and Kat for a great experience.

Loved this course. Thank you for a great quarter.

I have really enjoyed this course! The speakers were wonderful, commentary during the presentations and Dave's presentations were always great, and seeing everyone's projects transform from mid-quarter to now was very cool to see.

Thanks again for being accommodating for a medical student to join this class! I got a lot out of it. Thank you for all your hard work Kat & Dave.

Thank you again so much for teaching this course this year; I learned so much from both of you, our guest speakers, and most of all through my individual project.

Thanks again for a great quarter!

Thank you for an amazing class and the opportunity to meet so many cool people! Thank you for an amazing quarter!

Thanks so much for all your time this quarter, it has been a real highlight for me to be able to discuss each week's presentations together. I really appreciate all the energy that went into this course, and especially your willingness to offer this asynchronous option.

Thank you and Kat so much for a great quarter, I really enjoyed the class.

This course has been one of the best courses I have taken in any academic setting. Having returned from a long leave your course made me realize what I missed most about being at Stanford.

I really enjoyed this class this quarter. I particularly enjoyed our weekly lecture summary meetings. I thought those conversations we had were some of the biggest things I’ll take away from this course. I really enjoyed it. I hope you have a great rest of the week and I hope to meet you in person when it is safe to do so!

Thank you for an awesome quarter. Wishing you both the best.

Thanks again for a great quarter and for your flexibility allowing a medical student in the class.

I wanted to give you both a huge thank you for a wonderful quarter! I really appreciate all your work in successfully converting the class to a remote format while keeping it lively and engaging. I have learned a great deal from you and all the guest lecturers, and had a fantastic time working on the project. This has definitely been one of the most fulfilling classes I've taken at Stanford.

Have a great rest of your week - thank you again for a wonderful quarter!

I really enjoyed the Assistive Technology Faire last night. Networking with other professionals and sharing with students was great! I sent my email contact to your student who is designing the one handed cutting station. It sounds great! I have only use of 1 hand myself due to a stroke so that item really resonated with me.

Thank you again for the invitation to attend your class. This was a great class, and I am very thankful I had the opportunity to observe. I enjoyed all the classes. The student presentations were very impressive, and I enjoyed them too.

I thought all your students did an excellent job. They obviously spent a great deal of time on these projects and had some very good ideas.

I just joined the last two sessions, however, so impressed by their high-quality presentations. I can imagine how you well-organized this course even in the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Thank you so much for inviting me to this course. I learned a lot. Please keep in touch.

Comments from Cardinal Course Student Survey:

I found it valuable to engage in a real project where I created a more accessible experience. It helped me to gain perspective as a designer and truly understand and apply the principles we were learning.

I really enjoy being able to work with a real community partner and build something that they will be able to use long after the conclusion of the class.

It felt like my work was more than just a project/report for a class. Rather, I was making something impactful that had a tangible difference in the world.

Student replies to "What skills or knowledge did you learn or improve?"

Knowledge of design, designing for disability, disabilities in general, need finding, etc.

Considering different perspectives when designing a new technology

I learned a lot about working with members of the disability community, as well as being able to engage in a project that directly addresses humancentered design and accessibility.

Learned a lot about the disability community and some of the work that's being done to make the world as accessible as possible for people of all different abilities

How technology can be used to assist people who are differently abled

Working with people with disability, existing tech and research directions

We learned a lot through guest lectures and how to conduct a research report through our final project.

I learned a great deal about assistive technology. I learned a great deal about empathy, defining a problem, and how to design for the user.

Facets of disability and multiple ways we can approach engineering solutions for helping people with disabilities

I definitely improved my knowledge of assistive technology and disabilities. I was exposed to so many different forms of assistive technology that really expanded my horizons.

The field of assistive technology and how fragmented and personalized the space is!

Technologies used for accessibility and assistance.

Though I didn't work on a project, I did learn a lot about the design process and how to create solutions that are tailored to the individual. I also learned about various forms of existing assistive technology through the guest lectures and improved my ability to ask questions and communicate with community members through the virtual Assistive Technology Faire.

Student replies to "What would you like to say about this course to a student who is considering taking it in the future?"

Do it, take the project part of it!

Awesome opportunity to learn about assistive technology.

Guest lectures are super powerful and thought provoking!

Take this course for 2 - 3 units if you can - the ability to work with a community member on a quarterlong project is the most rewarding part of the class.

Take it the teaching is wonderful and the guest lecturers are even more so.

Very interesting course in an area that is often overlooked

Take it! Professor Jaffe is a great guy!

This was one of the best courses I've taken at Stanford. The guest lecturers are great. I have become a better designer and person because of this course.

Dave is super sweet and really cares about the material and each of his students.

Recommended for those passionate about engineering and designing assistive technology, as well as those interested in learning about how we think about disability! wonderful opportunity to learn from and connect with a wide variety of innovators and researchers who have made diverse solutions in assistive technology, as well as being able to engage with community members and those with disabilities directly. you can still get a lot out of the course even if you just take it for one unit (no project). Dave's passion for the course is inspiring.

The guest speakers are really interesting, and this class is an awesome way to learn from a lot of people and make some great connections. However, the online format caused some bumps, but in general, I would recommend.

Great class, very eye-opening and professor is great, my only regret is that I couldn't have taken it in person.

Definitely take it if you have some fabrication skills and want to do something good in this space!

While I think you'll get the most out of it if you work on a project, I felt that I learned a lot by just attending the lectures. The teaching team introduced us to several inspiring figures using or working on assistive technology, and there are opportunities to connect with them beyond the course if you make the effort.

This class is super rewarding. The projects are great, the people are awesome, and the experience is fantastic. Once you build something that improves someone's life, you see the positive impact of all the design training you have done.
