Course Description
The Curriculum and Instruction in Foreign Language Course will focus on theoretical principles, specific content, and practical techniques related to second language instruction. The topics emphasized include:
o Proficiency and communicative competence
o National Standards for Foreign Language Learning
o Language learning: theoretical perspectives
o Approaches and methods in teaching a foreign language
o Lesson plans for communication-based instruction
o Developing proficiency in second language skills
o Integration of culture into the basic skills
o Assessment and evaluation for communication-based instruction
o State Standards for Foreign Language Learning*
o Classroom management*
o Unit plans and curriculum development*
o Diversity in the foreign language classroom*
o Integrated curricula*
o Essential Questions and Backward Design*
o Technology in the foreign language classroom*
o Foreign language teacher as a professional*
o Total Physical Response lesson demonstration*
o Second language instructional strategies for different learning styles*

Course Requirements
1. Regular attendance
15% of final grade
2. Weekly written and oral assignments based on the readings
15% of final grade
3. Written reports for two different language classroom observations
Due: July 5 and August 3
10% of final grade
4. Lesson plans, based on the five-step model and National Foreign Language Standards
Due: July 6, July 30, August 2
50% of final grade
5. Final examination based on readings from the required texts and articles
10% of final grade
No incompletes will be granted for this course.
Syllabus
Assignments based on the readings are due on the next class
meeting.
